Frozen Chocolate Covered Bananas

When we reach that point in summer when it’s crazy hot—you know, like now—it’s hard not to crave frozen everything. And by frozen everything I mean ice cream everything. It’s a problem, which is why I’ve gone on a mission to amass as many easy, healthier alternatives as possible. These frozen chocolate covered bananas are on the top of my help-me-so-that-I-don’t-eat-all-the-ice-cream treats list because they are delicious, satisfying, and cool you down with way less sugar and fat.

What more could a hungry mama want for her family (and, uh, herself)?

And that’s not even all. My kids actually like making these as much as they do eating them. We melt the chocolate and coconut oil together, I manage the topping options (because you can imagine what they’d end up being if the boys were in charge), and they do the rest.

 

 You can also control the portion size. Sometimes, instead of using one whole banana, I’ll cut banana pieces and make small pops like these Chocolate Covered Kiwi Popsicles.

However you serve these—big or small, plain or smothered in crazy toppings—they are a fun and tasty way to cool down with something sweet but not too sugary.

And remember: You can always make these vegan by using non-dairy chocolate chips. I love Enjoy Life Chocolate Chips, which taste just like Toll House, but are dairy-free.

Frozen Chocolate Covered Bananas.

4 frozen bananas

*Can be shared with kids 10+ months

Ingredients

  • 4 bananas (ripe, but not overly soft)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (regular or vegan)
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil (refined or unrefined, which will lend a slight coconut flavor)
  • Toppings of choice

Instructions

  1. Line a baking sheet that fits in the freezer with parchment paper. Peel bananas and prep with popsicle sticks; set aside.
  2. Place chocolate chips and coconut oil in a double-boiler or microwave-safe bowl and melt. If using the microwave, start with 25-30 seconds on high, stir, and then continue in 10-12 second intervals, stirring between each one.
  3. Dip the bananas in the melted chocolate and then toppings of choice. Place on parchment and stick in the freezer for several hours or overnight before serving.

  3. I’m pretty sure I would hide these from the kids and eat them myself! Have you tried a little sea salt? Or salted pistachios? Thanks for the reminder of how delicious and simple frozen bananas are!

    Crunchy sea salt is THE best on these! Haven’t tried salted pistachios, but sounds perfect — the same as salt, but with a nutty crunch too. For our next batch!
