Why, hello! I’m back. Did I forget to mention that I’d be gone? I did, didn’t I? But I managed to pop in for a Mother’s Day wish and slice of strawberry rhubarb upside down cake. That’s something, right?! I’ll take time out of any vacation to have a slice of cake with you. Doing so is one of my favorite things.
As much as I missed you, Spain was wonderful. I’ve been before, but never to Barcelona. Have you? Have you seen la Sagrada Familia?! I’ve traveled quite a bit and have been lucky enough to see some truly amazing sights. Massive, golden Buddhas in Thailand, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the Parthenon in Greece, but there was something about Sagrada Familia that took my breathe away like nothing else. Perhaps the two glasses of wine with lunch played a role, but nevertheless, it brought me to tears. Just look!
A peek inside:
A sculpture on the facade—the kiss of Judas:
Making our way down from the top:
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak.
And, then, of course, there’s the food in Barcelona. The amazing food which nearly brought me to tears, too. I can’t wait to tell you more about it but, in the meantime, as I continue digesting the foie and egg yolk, chorizo and prawns, garlic and more garlic, please let’s talk healthy, home cooked food. I love to eat out and, believe me, I can throw down, but there is nothing like the lightness and simplicity of home cooked food after eating restaurant meal after restaurant meal for nearly a week.
The food in Barcelona is great, but I’m happy to be home and cooking again.
In honor of my post-vacation fervor for home cooked food, check out my latest favorite cookbooks for the family cook over at Cool Mom Picks. I’m a cookbook junkie so it was hard to choose just six, but these are the ones I’m digging most at the moment. The ones that make cooking fresh ingredients in my own kitchen a pleasure, even while jet lagged and reeling from an abrupt reintroduction to parenthood.
So what’s your take—what cookbook do you think no family cook should be without?
