Holy cow. One week until the start of Hanukkah and only 12 days ’til Christmas. How did this happen?! I was so on top of things… at one point… kinda recently. But, now, I’m in the midst of the annual mad rush to prepare.
Thank goodness for easy homemade gifts like my new favorite treat, Ginger Hot Chocolate Mix.
This takes no time to whip up. You can easily make a small batch or a large one. You can package it with other gifts—a pretty mug, homemade marshmallows or a package of Cookies for Kids Cancer—or just give it in a pretty jar like one of these inexpensive options. Use a pretty colored pen to write out directions on a post card and attach with ribbon:
Ginger Hot Chocolate
Mix 1/4 cup of hot chocolate mix with a mug full (about 1 1/4 cup) hot milk. Sip.
For an extra special treat, add a pinch of orange zest!
Make sure to use high quality chocolate—I like Scharffen Berger—and you can adjust the ginger to taste. I like just enough so that you can tell there’s ginger in there, but not enough to make it the dominant flavor.
Quick and easy for you. Decadent and delicious for your loved ones. It doesn’t get any better!
Ginger Hot Chocolate Mix
(can be shared with kids 12+ mos)*
makes 3 cups hot chocolate mix, enough for 12 servings
2 cups powdered sugar
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons cornstarch
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1. Sift all the ingredients together or whisk together in a bowl until well combined and there are no lumps left. Store in an airtight container. To make hot chocolate, combine 1/4 cup of mix with 1 mug full, about 1 1/4 cups, hot milk.
*Note: While there is nothing in this that cannot be shared with young eaters—and drinkers!—I recommend this for children 12+ months due to the high sugar content. Remember, a little of this goes a long way! Keep in mind that children under 12 months don’t require any drinks in addition to their solids, formula and/or breast milk other than water.
