{parenting} OHM + MMM Chop It Up: When NOT To Feed Kids

May 1, 2011

This blogging gig has led me to many cool people I would otherwise never know. It’s kind of remarkable. And, honestly, has kept me thriving as I’ve hacked my way through what it means to be a mom and a whole person separate from my family. I recently gushed about my food blogging friends, but today I want to tell you about someone else.

For the last year or so, I’ve been going back and forth with a Nicole, a novelist, journalist and the whip smart lady behind Ms. Mary Mack. Nicole is also a mom who was, until recently, based in Brooklyn. Though the BK was our original point of connection, we’ve found, after a zillion conversation about everything from bra fitters to blogging, that we have good friends in common. (Funny how that happens.) And now we’re collaborating.

As Nicole puts it, Ms. Mary Mack “takes an anthropological approach to motherhood, with the hope of gaining insight, information, wisdom, compassion, and passing it along.” Besides her own brilliant writing and honest observations, Nicole uses Ms. Mary Mack as a way to connect—and connect us—to moms all over the globe. From “expert” moms sharing their hard earned wisdom to first-time moms starting their journey. If you ask me, one of the coolest features on Nicole’s blog is Global Mamas where she plans on featuring a first-time mom from every country around the world.

I was honored when Nicole asked me to contribute to Ms. Mary Mack alongside her and so many other amazing mothers. I loved the idea of bringing the conversation about food to a place not normally all about food, and to humbly setting my advice about family feeding in a larger parenting context. But I wasn’t sure how to do it all justice (ie, not just give another guest post) until she and I ended up in an email exchange about a bad night at the dinner table.

That was it: real conversation between two real moms about the real issues, challenges and joys of feeding families.

And so “Third Thursdays” on Ms. Mary Mack was born. Every 3rd Thursday of the month, One Hungry Mama and Ms. Mary Mack will be talking food, family and finding the delicious balance that can be found in between it all. The plan is to keep it real by sharing email exchanges that Nicole and I actually have outside of writing formal blog posts.

Our first exchange focused on an unexpected outbreak of picky at the dinner table and our motherly instinct to feed, feed feed until child eats, eat, eats. It started out like this:

From: Ms. Mary Mack
Subject: The Toddler Diner

To: One Hungry Mama
This is crazy. I’m making him toast right now… for dinner. Aaargh! Very frustrating. He’s not typically a fussy eater …

i know. it’s horrible. but EVERY kid goes through it.
he’s almost 2, right?

… and continues. If you want to read more, hop on over to Ms. Mary Mack. And while there, poke around. I think you’ll like what you read.
