What’s to say about this dessert? Or maybe what’s not to say about this dessert. It’s so simple. Fresh, in-season oranges. As much homemade caramel sauce—plain or with cardamom—as you like. You can pour the caramel sauce over the oranges, as I do, or serve it on the side for dipping. (What kid will refuse the chance to dip?!)
The best part about this dessert is that it’s great for everyone 12+ mos to share. Just a tiny bit of caramel sauce for your littlest eaters will go a long way to make this all-natural dessert feel super special. And, if you Hungry Mamas and Papas are still feeling the need to be abstemious following the holidays, just a little sauce for you, too. Otherwise, if you feel like splurging or spoiling the (older) kids with a more serious dessert, add a little more caramel sauce. (And dare I suggest a swirl of chocolate sauce, too?!) You don’t have to go too nuts for this to feel like a decadent treat.
And did someone say nuts? Maybe I need to try sprinkling this with almonds or walnuts next time!!
It’s quick and easy to whip up caramel sauce. And look at how pretty!
To give it cardamom flavor, simply add ground cardamom to the pot along with the sugar and water in step 1 of my basic caramel sauce recipe. Add as much as you like. I find that 1 tsp per batch gives the right level of flavor.
