{cravings, green your eats} Saucy in the B-K

Remember how I was JUST saying that I don’t like jarred salsa because it tastes like cooked tomato? Well, consider me a changed woman. The salsa gods heard and led me to a line of salsas I can believe in.

While walking through the Brooklyn Flea today, I discoverd The Brooklyn Salsa Company, a new generation of salsa makers (as they like to call themselves) who’ve launched with a five product line of salsas, each named after one of the five boroughs. Not only am I in love with their products, but their company is pretty damn cool, too.

The salsas range from zero heat to spicy and come in inspired flavors that will satisfy your ordinary salsa cravings—from simple chips and salsa, to classic mexican or tex-mex favorites—but can also be used in wide ranging dishes. In fact, their site reminds us that salsa means sauce. And that’s just how you can use this stuff: as tasty, versatile sauces good for dipping, cooking or topping.

The Staten Island, for example, has cumin, ginger and sesame seeds, along with fresh lime that makes it a great ceviche sauce (just add fish, avocado and some more lime, if you like). The Bronx is made with eggplant, coconut milk and indian spices perfect for a one-pot cauliflower and chickpea curry dinner (and, for the record, it tastes great with just plain old tortilla chips).

And have I mentioned that these salsas are made with mostly organic ingredients? Are you feeling this stuff, or what?!

To top it all off, this is exactly the kind of food company that I can feel good supporting. They are committed to local ingredients and sustainable practices. In fact, their plan is to expand their line with salsas created specific to the markets in which they are sold and produced. This is an idea near and dear to my heart, as it was part of the big plan for ChowBaby, the frozen organic baby and kids food brand that I co-founded. Makes me swoooon to see other companies commit to this approach as part of their growth.

So, people, I’ll be stocking up on tomato salsa after all. The Hungry Boy was able to handle their Mild and Medium salsas. We also snagged a Hot for us.

If you live in the B-K, you can buy the good stuff at one of these stores. Otherwise, purchase directly from The Brooklyn Salsa Company.

I just bought some of this to be part of a Brooklyn-made food basket! I haven’t been able to taste it myself yet, but I’m planning to. Soon.
