{into the mouth of babes} Creamy Blackberry Ginger Oatmeal

Photo: Three Layer Cake

The Hungry Baby has reached an age where he can clearly communicate his like or dislike for a food. Huge wide open mouth and rocking back and forth = like. Closed mouth and smack at spoon = dislike. Breakfast this morning—oatmeal mixed with plain whole milk yogurt & blackberry puree with a dash of ground ginger—got some of the biggest wide open mouths and craziest rocking I’ve seen yet. I guess it was good. Wait! I tried it. It WAS good. Think I’ll have some tomorrow morning. Maybe you should have some, too.

Those of you taking a traditional approach to food introductions will want to hold off on this until 8- to 10-months because of the blackberries (which have the same allergen rating as blueberries). Those of you taking a liberal approach can start feeding this to little ones starting at 6 months.

  1. I love blackberries. This sounds good for adults too.

ooh, perfect! i just snagged a whole bunch of blackberries the other day and when i served them to my 3 year old this morning she declared that she only likes red berries “NOT black”. That’s a 3 year old for you. I’m sure my babe will polish them off with this recipe :)

what kind of oatmeal do you use? the infant type or regular?

I use regular oatmeal. I find it’s more all purpose. We can all eat it. The baby oatmeal cereal always seemed useless to me, for whatever reason. (If it’s more convenient for you, of course, go for it!) By 7 mos or so, both of my boys were able to handle regular oatmeal mixed in with a super smooth puree. I didn’t feed my first son oatmeal before that–he was more of a fruit and veggie baby. The handful of times I gave my second son oatmeal before he could handle the texture, i pureed his portion with some liquid (breast milk, formula or water will do) after making a pot for the rest of us.
